Swami Kriyananda

Swami Kriyananda (J. Donald Walters, 1926–2013) was a direct disciple of the great spiritual master Paramhansa Yogananda (author of the classic Autobiography of a Yogi), a bestselling author, and an internationally known lecturer and composer. Widely recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on meditation and yoga, he taught these principles and techniques to hundreds of thousands of students around the world.

In 1968 Kriyananda founded Ananda Village in Nevada City, California, dedicated to spreading the spirit of friendship, service, and community around the globe. Ananda is recognized as one of the most successful intentional communities in the world, and more than 1,000 people reside in Ananda communities in the US, India, and Italy. The European retreat and community located in Assisi, Italy, also serves Ananda meditation groups in Europe and Russia.

Ananda Village is home to The Expanding Light, a world-renowned guest retreat facility where thousands visit annually for renewal or instruction in many aspects of meditation, yoga, and the spiritual life. This booklet offers a valuable alternative to the usual volume on techniques of better living. Such a work typically devotes a chapter, or more, to the exposition of a single thought. Many readers, consequently, end up feeling vaguely perplexed. The reasoning followed was not at every stage that which they themselves would have followed. The examples given were not always relevant to life as they themselves lived it.

In the present booklet, the reader is given the opportunity to supply his own explanations and corroborate them by his own experience. Central concepts, each of which might have been made a chapter in a book, are presented succinctly, and simply enough to be self- evident.

The rhythm of these sayings is designed to penetrate beneath the undergrowth of mental restlessness, and to sink roots deep in the subconscious. The sayings have, therefore, the potential to influence the reader’s entire outlook on life.

A seed thought is offered for every day of the month. Begin a day at the appropriate date. Repeat the saying several times: first out loud, then softly, then in awhisper, and then only mentally. With each repetition, allow the words to become absorbed ever more deeply into your subconscious. Thus, gradually, you will acquire as complete an understanding as one might gain from a year’s course in the subject. At this point, indeed, the truths set forth here will have become your own.

Keep the book open at the pertinent page throughout the day. Refer to it occasionally during moments of leisure. Relate the saying as often as possible to real situations in your life. Then at night, before you go to bed, repeat the thought several times more. While falling asleep, carry the words into your subconscious, absorbing their positive influence into your whole being. Let it become thereby an integral part of your normal consciousness.

Day One

The secret of radiant health and well-being is proper diet: eating foods that are rich in vitality; studying proper food combinations; not overeating. If possible, eat in a harmonious environment, not in places where there is discord.

Day Two

The secret of radiant health and well-being is proper posture: Sit up straight; stand upright; hold your shoulders back, your chest up, your head high. Live more in the spine; let your movements flow outward from your inner center.

Day Three

The secret of radiant health and well-being is proper breathing. When walking, breathe deeply and rhythmically: Inhale counting four, hold four, exhale four, hold out four. Repeat this exercise six to twelve times. Make it a point to breathe deeply, from the diaphragm.

Day Four

The secret of radiant health and well-being is proper exercise. Be conscious of the life-force flowing in your every movement.

Day Five

The secret of radiant health and well-being is energization. Live by this teaching: “The greater the will, the greater the flow of energy.” Learn, and practice, exercises designed to increase your energy. Live in the awareness that you are energy.

Day Six

The secret of radiant health and well-being is daily meditation. From the center of stillness within you, radiance will illuminate your entire being.

Day Seven

The secret of radiant health and well-being is impersonal love, which brings the body into perfect harmony. Love develops of itself, once the pettiness of self-love has been renounced.
